Computers, office equipment and many other electrical devices around your facility continue to draw power when they're not in use, even when everyone has left for the day. Such standby or "phantom" power can be a costly waste of energy.

Regularly unplugging devices when they're not in use would eliminate this waste, but it's not really feasible. Fortunately, there's a smarter solution — advanced power strips and smart plugs automatically cut power to plugged in devices when they are not in use, saving energy while optimizing convenience.

Advanced power strips

Advanced power strips (APS)look like normal power strips, but they include some smart energy-saving capabilities. They automatically switch off selected devices when they're not in use, and they can collect energy use data. APS units typically includes up to six "controllable" outlets and two or three constant or "hot" outlets for equipment that must remain on. They control connected equipment in four different ways:

  1. Current-sensing units shut off connected equipment when it detects a drop in power that is below a certain threshold, such as when a computer enters sleep mode.
  2. Occupancy-sensing devices power off equipment when no one is using it.
  3. Timer units switch connected equipment on and off based on a programmed schedule.
  4. Connected smart strips can be controlled using a voice assistant or mobile device.

Smart plugs

Smart plugs go right into your existing outlets. In addition to automatically shutting off power to unused devices, they also include some additional advanced features.

  • Power monitoring. Through a mobile app, you can track energy use of plugged in devices in real time and get reports on energy use over a period of time, such as a month.
  • Programming. Program multiple smart plugs and their plugged in devices as a single unit. For example, you can devices on or off based on the time of day or certain situations.

Both solutions are smart and easy— just plug and play. With smart plugging, you'll save energy and money and put your business on the cutting edge of advanced technology.
